Let’s give a warm “Spotlight on Seniors” welcome to Derek Rubo – Pewaukee High School!
Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My family and I moved to Pewaukee in 2016 and enjoy everything that Lake Country has to offer. We love to be outdoors going hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, etc. I have one sister that is in middle school, and I enjoy going to her band concerts and watching her play flute. We have two dogs and a cat. The little dog can be very annoying sometimes, but I still love her haha.
What are your interests and hobbies?
I love being active and outdoors, and to participate in hunting for deer, turkey, and ducks, but I always have such a hard time waking up before the sun rises. Recently, I’ve been involved in track and I’m committed to weight training. I used to play baseball for many years and I still love to play, just don’t have the time.
Tell us about one of your favorite classes in school.
Out of all my classes throughout school, one of my favorites is PLC 2 (Programmable Logic Controllers) through the dual enrollment program at WCTC. I learned so much in that class related to the field I want to go into. Younger students should consider the dual enrollment program. Its a great opportunity for you to dip your feet in a college level learning.
What’s your least favorite?
Any English class; my brain doesn’t think that way.
Do you have a favorite memory from the school year?
Prom during my junior year.
What’s something you worked hard on this past year, a moment or an achievement you’re particularly proud of?
Getting back into track was something I worked hard for. Before my senior year, the last time I was in track was in 8th grade and hadn’t run in a while. I think of myself as a fit person, but it took a lot of work getting back into running as fast as I can, since all I did at the time was lift weights at the gym.
What has surprised you most about school this past year?
I was surprised with the challenge of balancing everything with school, track, and my social life. Especially since I’m taking college classes, so I need to put a lot more work in to keep good grades.
What are you looking forward to in the upcoming year?
College and living the dorm life with my friend.
What are some of your goals (academic, sports, personal)?
My biggest goal is maintaining my good grades throughout the rest of the school year, and in track I want to keep improving myself day by day getting faster and faster.
What is something you are good at and/or enjoy doing?
I enjoying playing video games on my free time.
Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
I see myself finishing college and figuring out where I want to start my career.
Explain a time you wanted to give up but didn’t?
A time I wanted to give up was during volleyball tryouts my junior year. I had no experience and wasn’t confident I’d make the team since a lot of the players that did try out had prior experience. Trying out made me nervous, but I’m glad I did since I made the team and had a fun season.
What are your favorite memories?
Going to football games.
Is there someone special who you admire?
My mom.
Do you have plans for the future?
Travel.
If you could do anything, what would it be?
Find a cure for cancer.
What do you love about Lake Country area?
The scenery.
Tell us one piece of wisdom you’ve learned so far.
Be involved in the community.
Do you have an unwritten rule at your school that everyone follows?
Be kind.
What advice would you give to an incoming student?
Pay attention and all grades count. Also, enjoy high school years; have some fun.
