Rachel Oberholtzer

Meet Dr. Rachel Oberholtzer

It is truly an honor to introduce Dr. Rachel to The Faces of Lake Country. As a pet owner, it is important to have a veterinarian, who has the knowledge and expertise to provide the best possible care for my pets. Her compassion and caring spirit make her an invaluable asset to not only me, but our entire community.

It’s no secret that pets are beloved members of our families, and when they require medical attention, it can be a stressful and emotional time. Having a trusted veterinarian like Dr. Rachel by your side can make all the difference. It’s important to have a veterinarian who not only has the necessary knowledge and expertise but who also cares deeply about their patients and their well-being. Dr. Rachel and the staff at Hallet embody those qualities.

It’s clear that growing up on a hobby farm in Oconomowoc had a profound impact on Dr. Rachel’s life and career path. Her love for animals, fostered by her experiences on the farm, led her to pursue veterinary medicine as a career. The job she held at Wisconsin Equine Clinic was particularly influential, as the veterinarians there inspired and guided her along her path.

In addition to her work with animals, she also gained valuable experience in the restaurant industry. These jobs taught her the value of hard work and provided her with the people skills that are essential in any profession.

Her educational journey took her to both UW Whitewater and UW Madison, where she earned her degree in veterinary medicine. After completing an equine internship in Massachusetts, she returned to Wisconsin to pursue a career in small animal practice. Her passion for helping animals has led her to your current position at Hallett Veterinary Hospital, where she is able to make a difference in the lives of pets and their owners every day.

Things I LOVE about being a veterinarian!

I think people who love animals are amazing individuals and if you have a pet, I would love the opportunity to meet you and your special fur-baby.

Firstly, I have the opportunity to help animals and make a positive impact on their lives. I am often called upon to diagnose and treat a variety of illnesses and injuries in animals, and I am involved in preventative care such as vaccinations and routine check-ups. Seeing animals recover and thrive after receiving care can be incredibly gratifying for veterinarians.

Secondly, being a veterinarian can be intellectually stimulating. I’m required to have a deep understanding of animal biology and physiology, as well as an ability to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions. This can require constant learning and staying up to date with the latest research and techniques in the field.

Finally, veterinarians often have the opportunity to build relationships with both animals and their owners. They can play a crucial role in helping pet owners make informed decisions about their pets’ health and well-being and may even provide support and comfort during difficult times such as end-of-life care.

About Rachel Oberholtzer

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

I married my best friend Jeff in 2009. He has been my rock and companion through everything. Jeff is a chef and runs the food service program at the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. Together, we have two handsome sons, Logan who is nine and Brody who is seven. Our dog, cat and some chickens that otherwise keep us busy. We love to be outside and you can find us fishing, swimming, riding bikes, jumping on our trampoline, hunting or playing in the snow.

Q: What do you love most about what you do?

There is too much to choose from! First and foremost, I love that I can experience the human-animal bond everyday through my clients and patients. I am blessed to be able to care for people’s animals and at the same time get to know them as well. Every day is different, and every case is a puzzle for me to be able solve. I am able to learn something new almost every day as well. I feel grateful that I have the ability to end suffering and give a pet a peaceful departure from their beloved owners.

Rachel Oberholtzer & The Community

Q: What is your favorite thing about our community, favorite thing to do, or something unique about our community that you love? (Feel free to share as much as you’d like!)

I love that Lake Country is so active all year round. Summer is probably my favorite season as there is so much to do! The lakes in the area are great for swimming, playing and fishing. Beer garden events in any of the Lake Country communities are enjoyable. We also like to shoot and take classes at Fletcher Arms in Pewaukee on our free time.

Q: Do you have a favorite coffee shop, cocktail shop, or restaurant?

There are so many to choose from that I love! My kids love the Kiltie and the Train Depot of course. My husband and I like to go to Sobie’s, Twisted Fire, VIP Sushi, or ID if we have the opportunity for a date night.

Q: What 3 words would you use to describe our community?

Loving, Active, and Close-knit.

For Fun

Q:  Have you ever been pulled over by a Police Officer?

I have been pulled over many times, lol. I went through a phase in life (I think in my 20’s haha) where I couldn’t learn my lesson for speeding. I’m more of a rule follower now.
Q:  How did you get out of getting a ticket?
I have never gotten out of a ticket but don’t think that I have ever really tried. Accepting the appropriate consequences are something I was always taught to do. I also was taught that you listen to an officer and do whatever you are told by them. I haven’t tried to lie to one!
Q:  What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve told a client?
I make loads of phone calls in my days at work. One day I was finishing a call with a client and accidentally wrapped up the call with “bye, love you” like I would have if I was saying goodbye to my husband. That is one of those situations where you realize it as you’re saying it, can’t stop it, and then hang up and cannot even apologize or laugh about it with the client because it happened so fast. I was mortified and hoped they got a kick out of it and understood.
Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

Jeff and I love to crack jokes using movie and TV quotes, it never gets old to us.

Q: What is your favorite book, TV show, movie, poem, or song? Why?

There are just too many to choose from! I have watched Friends too many times to count and enjoy Yellowstone. My husband and I love almost all movies! I love to read, fiction novels mostly, but have had less time for that after having kids. For music anything christian or country will do!

Q: Who inspires you to be better?

My husband and kids… everyday.

Q: If you were a drink (can be a coffee drink, alcoholic, non-alcoholic, etc.), what would you be?

Depends on the day. Maybe a good old fashioned to soothe the soul. Or a nice glass of wine, red or white depending on the season, to relax with.

Q: If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be with? Why?

Jesus. Can you imagine speaking with and spending one on one time the most influential person that ever lived?

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

Travel, someday. Anywhere really, but I would love to go to Africa and Ireland.

Q: What makes you the happiest?

I think just my day-to-day life. My faith, husband, kids, family, friends, co-workers, and clients. I enjoy building relationships with with the people that surround me.
