About Susie Sheldon
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
Having spent the majority of my life in Wisconsin, my connection to the state deepened twenty-one years ago when my late husband and I made the decision to relocate to Oconomowoc. Our choice was driven by a desire to be closer to family and to provide our daughter, Allie, with the experience of growing up in a small town, just like we did. The allure of Lake Country, coupled with the charm and convenience of a small-town lifestyle, captured our hearts. I recall the joyous atmosphere during our first homecoming parade in downtown Oconomowoc. The bustling energy of the town mirrored our excitement, and as we joined the festivities, my husband and I felt so grateful for our family to experience life in this wonderful community.
Q: Please tell us about your life and what you do (whether working in our community, a business owner, volunteer, etc.). How did you choose that path?
Soon after moving to Oconomowoc, I decided to change careers. Despite the excitement and fulfillment that came with my role as a Human Resource Manager over many years, a desire for a more balanced life and the pursuit of another career goal prompted me to make a significant change. With a longstanding passion for design, I took a leap and started a small design business, a decision that turned out to be one of the best I’ve ever made.
The gift of more time with my family coupled with the daily joy of being creative made the transition worthwhile. Crafting comfortable and beautiful homes for my clients became my newfound passion. Whether decorating their home for the holidays, revamping living areas, or creating floral arrangements, my goal has remained constant—to help clients rediscover the joy of their homes. Given that I frequently shopped at Stein’s Garden and Home for myself and my clients, joining the Oconomowoc Stein’s team was a natural progression.
For over 16 years, I’ve had the privilege of designing inviting and inspiring visual displays, which promote our products, facilitate sales, and enhance our customers in-store shopping experience.
Q: What do you love most about what you do?
In my role as the Home and Garden Lead at Stein’s in Oconomowoc, I find immense joy in sharing my passion for design with our valued customers. Guiding them through our extensive home decor product selections, I help them bring beauty and style into their living spaces. One of the aspects I cherish most about my position is the opportunity to transform our store and elevate our customers’ shopping experiences through eye-catching displays. Throughout the year, and particularly during the holidays, I take pride in creating visually appealing displays that captivate and inspire. It’s a privilege to contribute to making Stein’s a destination where creativity and design come to life, enhancing the overall shopping experience for our customers.
Q: What is the most rewarding part?
The most rewarding aspect of my role as the Home and Garden Lead at Stein’s in Oconomowoc has undoubtedly been the relationships I’ve cultivated over the years. I am so grateful that many of our customers have become cherished friends, and this connection has been an invaluable gift. Building these genuine friendships has added a profound layer of fulfillment to my job. Equally, I appreciate the camaraderie among my colleagues; together, we work diligently to transform our store into a beautiful and inviting shopping destination for our customers. These relationships, both with customers and colleagues, contribute to making working at Stein’s a fulfilling and enriching experience.
Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in doing something similar to what you have done/are doing?
I consider myself fortunate to have enjoyed two deeply satisfying career paths—one in human resources and another in design. I consistently advocate for individuals to pursue their dreams, even if it involves a career change. The process of rediscovering your strengths and dedicating yourself to your passion is incredibly gratifying and worthwhile.
