Today we are highlighting a special teacher at Oconomowoc High School! Meet Sal Logue! He is in his 6th year as the health education teacher and his 4th year as the head football coach at Oconomowoc High School. Prior to teaching in Oconomowoc, he also taught health and special education at both Brookfield Central HS and Arrowhead HS. He grew up in Menomonee Falls where he played football and baseball. After graduating from Menomonee Falls HS, he attended Carroll College, playing football there and completing his degree in physical education! About Sal Logue

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

I have been married to my wife Jolene for 15 years and we have two children, Ariana and Nick. They both attend Silver Lake Intermediate School.

Q: Please tell us about your life and what you do (whether working in our community, a business owner, volunteer, etc.). How did you choose that path?

I am a teacher and coach at OHS. Prior to graduating high school I decided to pursue a career in education. Working with others was always appealing to me. I wanted to do something where each and every day brought different types of challenges.

Q: What do you love most about what you do?

It would have to be working to have a positive influence on all of my students. I especially enjoy forming relationships with students who I may not have very much in common with in our personal lives.

Q: What was the most difficult challenge in getting to where you are now or in your life?

When I first began teaching, it was probably landing a job in a desirable location. More recently there have been many changes in education, and I feel people are very concerned about not only what we are teaching but also how we teach it.

Q: What is the most rewarding part?

I feel the most rewarding part would be when kids let you know that you have affected their life in a positive manner. Recently, a student thanked me for giving some positive advice regarding a complicated situation. I’m thankful that my students feel good about the environment in my classroom.

Q: What are some of your future goals? Do you have anything exciting coming up that you would like to share?

My goals are to simply represent OHS in a positive light both in the school and on the field. I believe that everything we do is a direct reflection of our wonderful community.

Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in doing something similar to what you have done/are doing?

The only advice I would give an individual pursing a career in education would be to make sure that they are doing it for the students. This is not a profession to get into if being self-serving appeals to you.

Sal Logue & Our Community

Q: What is your favorite thing about our community, favorite thing to do, or something unique about our community that you love? (Feel free to share as much as you’d like!)

I love the fact that our community always has something going on downtown. Our community finds any reason to bring people together. One of my favorites is the “Bands on the Beach” night. Music lakeside on a summer night is great!

Q: Who is an interesting person you’ve met here in our community, and how have they inspired you?

Without a doubt it would have to be Nathaniel Froemming. I had Nathaniel in class and have coached him on the football field. Nathaniel was in an accident during middle school and lost his right arm. Also during this period he lost his father. This is a lot for any individual to deal with, but certainly for a child. Nathaniel simply learned how to use his left hand and is a part of both the varsity football and baseball programs. It is difficult to have a bad day or get down on yourself when you see what someone like Nathaniel has persevered through. He is an inspiration to me and I assume many others.

Q: Do you have a favorite coffee shop, cocktail shop, or restaurant?

Cornerstone.

Q: What 3 words would you use to describe our community?

Friendly, Welcoming, Exciting.

For Fun

Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

I am very sensitive to many different issues, especially my students who may be experiencing tougher situations than a traditional student. I find them inspiring and I’m grateful for any small way that I can help make their lives better.

Q: What is your favorite book, TV show, movie, poem, or song? Why?

The Rocky Series of movies – The perseverance he demonstrates as well as the fact that he is Italian.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?

My family.

Q: If you were a drink (can be a coffee drink, alcoholic, non-alcoholic, etc.), what would you be?

Sal: No idea.

Karen: The interviewer would interject, “lemonade”… sweet and sassy… teacher, confident and football coach! That is a powerful combination!

Q: If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be with? Why?

Tom Izzo- Michigan State Basketball Coach- I feel that he does a great job of adapting to kids and molding them into being the best version of themselves. He accomplishes this year after year.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

I would love to visit Fenway Park.

Q: What makes you the happiest?

I feel like seeing people happy make me the happiest.
