Sarah Kraus
Congratulations to AHS math teacher Mrs. Sarah Kraus, who has been selected as the 2024 AHS Teacher of the Year! Sarah embodies the qualities of an exceptional educator, demonstrating patience, compassion, and a remarkable ability to inspire and empower her students. She consistently fosters a learning environment where every student feels valued, supported, and motivated to excel. One student remarked, “Ms. Kraus is always available to talk to; she just seems to get it when you need to take a minute.” Another shared, “Ms. Kraus is my favorite math teacher because she always found multiple ways to explain math in class, making sure that everyone was able to understand it. She really made sure we were all with her, all the time.” Yet another student expressed, “Ms. Kraus finally made math make sense. I can do it now; I could not do it last year.” Perhaps most poignantly, another student emphasized, “Ms. Kraus is the most patient person in the whole world. She took her time explaining and waiting for me to do the problems. She is so kind and really believes in me.”
Sarah’s genuine belief in her students’ potential and her unwavering support have transformed countless individuals’ attitudes towards math, empowering them to overcome obstacles and achieve success. Sarah is not only an outstanding educator but also a beacon of inspiration and mentorship for her students and colleagues alike. Program Leader Cheryl Bonlender shares: Her commitment to personal growth, coupled with her innovative approach to teaching and tireless pursuit of student development, make her a truly deserving candidate for the Teacher of the Year award.

About Sarah Kraus

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

I am the mother of THREE boys who are currently 15, 13 and 10 years old. They are active in sports and truly anything outdoors. Being a mom is one of my favorite things in life. I have coached my boys in some sports and am always their #1 fan!

Q: Please tell us about your life and what you do (whether working in our community, a business owner, volunteer, etc.). How did you choose that path?

I am a high school math teacher at Arrowhead High School. As an educator for the last 24 years, I have come to appreciate and value the strength of relationships in the classroom. I have taught almost every math course at the high school level through Pre-Calculus. As much as I will always be a true math nerd, I now see teaching as something more than sharing my love for mathematics. My main focus now is the art of connecting and communicating with teenagers.

I truly believe that being an educator is a true calling and despite some challenges that come my way, I could not dream about feeling as passionate about any other occupation. My high school Calculus teacher inspired me to become a math teacher, along with teaching tennis lessons. I recognized that working with kids was a natural path for me.

Q: What do you love most about what you do?

I love connecting with students through story telling and genuine conversations.

Q: What is the most rewarding part?

The most rewarding part of being a teacher is being part of the growth of a student. Whether that growth is academic or in general confidence, knowing that I can be part of this type of growth brings me joy.

Q: What are some of your future goals? Do you have anything exciting coming up that you would like to share?

Recently I have enjoyed challenging myself academically. For the second summer, I have participated in the Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program at UW-Madison that focuses on Quantum Physics. Although Physics is not the subject area that I instruct, I am able to apply a variety of concepts into my classroom. One of the most important concepts I have learned is what it feels like to be a student again. I have become very reflective on how it feels to be challenged academically. In turn, I have been able to relate better to the students in my classroom.

Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in doing something similar to what you have done/are doing?

The best advice I can give someone about being a teacher is to focus upon caring for each student and to be your genuine self so that students can easily connect.
