About John Ellis

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

I am from Oconomowoc, where I spent my formative years and worked in diverse local businesses before discovering my passion for the world of metal. In 1981, I tied the knot with my beloved wife, Julie, and since then, we’ve cherished the simplicity and warmth of staying rooted in our hometown throughout our married life. We have two grown children and a son-in-law. Our family also includes three amazing, affectionate, and athletically talented grandchildren.

Q: Please tell us about your life and what you do (whether working in our community, a business owner, volunteer, etc.). How did you choose that path?

I am the owner and operator of Ellis Welding. Knowing the right weld for the job comes from experience, whether it’s heavy-duty welds vs more intricate aluminum welding. “Customer service is as strong as our welds” is not just a tag line. It’s a commitment. No job is too big or too small for Ellis Welding! We have helped customers with everything from lawn ornaments and furniture to boats, factory overruns, and more.

I’m also on the board of directors of the German Christmas Market. I’ve been involved since the 2nd year. It’s a great way to give back to the community and enjoy fellowship with other community members.

Q: What was the most difficult challenge in getting to where you are now or in your life?

Getting married early brought its own set of challenges, especially as I had to transition from focusing on financial stability to chasing my dream of starting my own business.

Q: What is the most rewarding part?

I find great fulfillment in giving back to my community. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring several young individuals in my field, imparting valuable skills and knowledge. Additionally, I’ve contributed to various robotics teams, sharing expertise in fabrication techniques, and have adapted wheelchairs to support physically challenged athletes. Embracing the philosophy of “paying it forward,” I believe in the importance of supporting others and seeing their visions come to fruition. It’s incredibly gratifying when individuals seek me out for assistance in problem-solving or bringing their ideas to life. While I’ve had the opportunity to work with prominent clients like the US Mint and Victoria’s Secret, I equally value the relationships formed through smaller, lesser-known projects, recognizing their significance in making a positive impact.

Q: What are some of your future goals? Do you have anything exciting coming up that you would like to share?

Currently, my goals are more personal in nature. Last fall, my spouse and I acquired a motor home, and we eagerly anticipate embarking on numerous road trips together.

Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in doing something similar to what you have done/are doing?

Remain receptive to coaching and continuous learning, then take decisive action.
