Colleen Carney

Colleen Carney was born and raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin, surrounded by a deep love for animals. Her journey into the world of veterinary medicine began early, as a member of the 4H Dog Project. Throughout her formative years, she had the privilege of working closely with her local veterinarian and interning at the Racine Zoo, nurturing her passion for animal care.

A proud Badger, Colleen pursued her undergraduate degree and ultimately graduated with a veterinary degree from the esteemed University of Wisconsin-Madison in the class of 2014.

In 2022, she joined Hallett Veterinary Hospital to broaden her horizons and seize the opportunity to delve into new areas of expertise. Here, she’s had the chance to learn advanced techniques such as laparoscopic surgery and collaborate with a team of truly exceptional doctors and staff. It’s been an incredible journey, and she’s excited to continue growing and learning in this dynamic field.

About Colleen Carney

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

In my immediate family, it’s just me and my dog, Zenga, whom I adopted in 2019. Being an aunt to four wonderful nieces and nephews is one of my most cherished roles. Although my parents and siblings live in Kenosha, I make it a priority to visit them as often as I can.

Q: Please tell us about your life and what you do (whether working in our community, a business owner, volunteer, etc.). How did you choose that path?

In eighth grade, a teacher suggested I visit a veterinary office for “career day”. Intrigued by the day-to-day work, it wasn’t until I witnessed a life-saving surgery after a German Shepherd swallowed a tennis ball that I knew I wanted to become a vet. Seeing the opportunity to combine my love for animals with my passion for teaching and helping people was truly inspiring.

Q: What do you love most about what you do?

I absolutely love the fact that I get to meet new faces each and every day. The variety in our work is something I truly enjoy, but what really fills my heart with joy is witnessing pets thrive after a challenging case. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them recover and flourish.

Q: What was the most difficult challenge in getting to where you are now or in your life?

Honestly, I feel incredibly fortunate to have known what career path I wanted to pursue at such an early stage in my education. Achieving my goal of becoming a veterinarian has been immensely fulfilling, and even after ten years in the field, I can confidently say that I still love what I do every single day.

Q: What is the most rewarding part?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is witnessing well-loved pets thrive and getting to know their families. Whether it’s a routine annual check-up or seeing a sick pet return to their happy, healthy self, being part of their journey is incredibly fulfilling.

Q: What are some of your future goals? Do you have anything exciting coming up that you would like to share?

I’ve been undergoing intense training to perform ACL repair surgery for dogs with knee injuries. I’m thrilled to announce that we’re now offering our clients and their beloved pets the “TightRope” fixation surgery to stabilize their knees after an ACL injury or tear. This specialized procedure will help dogs get back on their feet and back to their happy, active selves in no time!

Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in doing something similar to what you have done/are doing?

Anyone interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine should explore various hospitals, take advantage of opportunities to work or volunteer in different animal-related jobs, and take the time to figure out which aspects of the field interest them the most. Veterinary medicine offers a wide range of opportunities to apply a love for animals to a rewarding career, so it’s essential to explore and find the right fit.

Colleen Carney & Our Community

Q: What is your favorite thing about our community, favorite thing to do, or something unique about our community that you love? (Feel free to share as much as you’d like!)

One of the things I love most about Lake Country is the vibrant community events, such as the farmer’s market, beer gardens, and concerts in the park. But what really makes this area special to me are the fantastic hiking spots where I can take my dog and the beautiful lakes where I can go kayaking. It’s the perfect blend of outdoor adventures and community life.

Q: Who is an interesting person you’ve met here in our community, and how have they inspired you?

I was fortunate to get to know Dr. John Hallett upon my first visit to Oconomowoc. I was blown away by how loved he is amongst clientele and inspired by his ongoing pursuit of his love of art.

Q: Do you have a favorite coffee shop, cocktail shop, or restaurant?

For a delicious latte, you can’t go wrong with Whelan’s coffee shop, and if you’re in the mood for a glass of Cabernet, Waterford Wine and Spirits is the perfect spot!

Q: What 3 words would you use to describe our community?

Vibrant, Neighborly and Thriving.

For Fun

Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

I’m a huge fan of country music and have spent the last year enjoying line dancing classes in the community. In addition to dancing, I have a variety of hobbies, from fishing to quilting. Recently, I’ve been involved in a fun community project for the Wizard of Oz anniversary celebration, which has been a fantastic experience!

Q: Who inspires you to be better?

Throughout my entire life, my parents have been incredible supporters of all my endeavors. My parenst continue to be some of my biggest cheerleaders. They’re always encouraging me to never stop learning and to find new ways to enrich my life. I am endlessly grateful for their love and support.

Q: If you were a drink (can be a coffee drink, alcoholic, non-alcoholic, etc.), what would you be?

Hmmm, maybe lemonade? It’s sweet and tangy. I love the idea of making something positive out of something sour. As they say, “when life gives you lemons!”

Q: If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be with? Why?

Benjamin Franklin. I’ve always found him to be a fascinating figure, with such significant influence on the early development of our country. His multifaceted contributions and his role as a founding father have always intrigued me.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

I’ve always had a dream of visiting all 50 states. There’s so much diversity and beauty to explore across the United States. I can’t wait to experience it all firsthand.

Q: What makes you the happiest?

I am happiest when I’m out on a warm, sunny walk with my dog or spending quality time with my family. Those moments bring me so much joy and contentment.

Q: Any general life advice you would like to share?

There is a quote from Mother Theresa that says “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” These words describe my hopes to always bring a smile and leave a positive mark on the people I meet.
