Meet Greg Serres
Greg Serres is the owner of Merton Feed Company, “The Best Mill on Mill Street”. He went to Merton School and Arrowhead High School. Early on he was involved in 4-H where he showed chickens at the Waukesha County Fair and Wisconsin State Fair. Hunting, fishing and trapping in his back yard were a big part of his life. Like his grandfather Benny and father Don, he joined the Merton Volunteer Fire Department.
Benny and Don bought the mill in 1956 and he grew up there learning by their example. Greg says, “I don’t ever remember not being there!” The biggest part of the business then was feeding dairy cattle. After high school he took nutrition classes to learn how to properly fortify feeds for dairy cattle herds and other production livestock. Many farms in the area had cows, pigs and a flock of chickens. He’s raised chickens all his life, and can only thank God for blessing him with everything he has.
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I’ve been married to Michelle for 29 years. We have three adult children – Benny, Emma and Abigale. Three dogs – Rosie, Russell and Ripley, two cats, a donkey, some goats, a few ducks and geese, some chickens and, oh, a guinea pig.
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I enjoy helping people with their animals. Today I help with many different animals as the area has changed. Formulating feeds for large stables or helping customers with their first horse, goats, chickens, pigs, dogs, cats, and more.
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Palmers Steak House, Johnny Manhattan’s.
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I’ve spent my whole life here.
Q: What advice would you give to people?
Work hard and keep your promises. Always show up early – you’re either early or late. There’s no such thing as being on time.
Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
Wayne Gretzky, one of the greatest hockey players ever. We would meet at Sweet Dreams because of their Chicago Style Hot Dog. He loved eating hot dogs before games.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
The people.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
Doing things with my wife other than work.
Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I helped coach Arrowhead Ice Hockey when it first started.
